About UsGlen Ridge Taekwon-do has been serving the Montclair area for over 20 years, having been founded on 2002 and moved to the Glenridge Avenue location in 2005. We are a community dedicated to practicing Original and Traditional Taekwon-do, emphasizing the values of discipline, focus, regular practice and continuous improvement. Our staff of internationally certified Black Belt instructors strive to help each student succeed, while challenging them to reach their potential, and develop positive habits through taekwon-do practice.
To get the most out of their practice, students should:
Mighty Lions (students age 4-6)The Mighty Lions classes emphasize focus and listening skills, following directions, confidence building, as well as respect for self and others, while working on physical conditioning through Taekwon-do practice.
This program is tailored for our younger students, and is adapted to shorter attention spans and a need for structure and kindness. Improvement in balance and gross motor skills are paired with courtesy and self control through training.
The standard Mighty Lions program includes two classes per week. We are open six days a week, and offer each student more than one class daily for their age and rank. We also offer summer day camps that are specifically designed for our younger students.
Juniors (students age 7-14)The Juniors program develops flexibility, physical development, positive competitiveness, self-esteem, attention to detail, goal setting and achievement.
We have Juniors classes for all belt levels where newer students can follow the example of advanced students and also Beginners classes. We also have classes that mix Adult students and Juniors which offer the Juniors a more focused class. Some people refer to this as the “Family” class as parents can train with their children in the Juniors program.
Our Juniors program works on cooperation and leadership skills in addition to teaching the discipline and control of Taekwon-do.
The Juniors program includes unlimited classes per week. We are open six days a week, and offer each student at least two classes daily for their age and rank. We have summer camps that are specifically designed for Juniors, and we participate in a summer camp that is open to Adults and Juniors.
Adults (students age 15 and up)Adults classes develop physical and mental fitness, and help students gain confidence in a positive community, with classes that teach physical and mental self-defense. Students exercise both mind and body while training within a traditional Taekwon-do system. Adult classes are open to students of all levels and abilities.
We have classes that mix Adults and Juniors which offer the Adults a faster-pace from the Adult-only classes. Some people refer to this as the “Family” class as parents can train with their children in the Juniors program.
The Adults program includes unlimited classes per week and we are open six days a week. We also participate in a summer boot camp that is open to Adults and Juniors.
Camps: Mighty Lions, Juniors and AdultsOur camps for Young Adults, Juniors and Mighty Lions take place in our large, bright, air-conditioned space, as well as outdoors when weather permits.
Mighty Lions Camp (kids age 4-6)Our Mighty Lions summer camp is designed specifically for children age 4-6. As in our year-round program, Mighty Lions Summer Camp will bring fun and play while working on key Taekwon-do skills including discipline, focus, and motor skills development.
A typical day at Mighty Lions Camp starts with circle time where campers and counselors introduce themselves and play getting-to-know-you games. After that there is snack and then a Taekwon-do lesson, followed by games. Half-day campers are picked up and then full-day campers go to the park for lunch. In the afternoon campers get another Taekwon-do lesson and additional games until it’s time to be picked up.
Juniors Camp (kids age 7-14)Juniors camp is designed for campers ages 7-14, and is an excellent way for new students to establish a solid foundation in Taekwon-do fundamentals, and for experienced martial artists to improve their minds and bodies. Emphasis will be placed on Taekwon-do instruction and age-appropriate physical conditioning through classes and games
A typical day at Juniors Camp starts with circle time where campers and counselors introduce themselves and play getting-to-know-you games, memory games, and circle games. After that there is snack and then a Taekwon-do lesson, followed by games. Campers go to one of the local parks for lunch. In the afternoon campers get another Taekwon-do lesson and additional games until it’s time to be picked up.
Young Adults Camp (age 12-18, and age 11 Red & Black Belts)This day camp is open to people age 12 and up, and to Red Belts and Black Belts age 11. Because these students are older than the younger Juniors they have greater capabilities that need to be encouraged and challenged to bring out their abilities and develop the more mature martial artist we know is inside these students.
This camp is an excellent way for young people with no experience to get an immersion into taekwon-do and for experienced martial artists to improve their taekwon-do knowledge. Emphasis will be placed on the mental side of Taekwon-do and on deepening an understanding of the higher concepts within Taekwon-do training while still working on age-appropriate physical conditioning.
A typical day in Young Adults Camp will contain the same elements that other camps have: two taekwon-do classes, games, snack and lunch but this older group will have more independence and the week will have different themes or different projects over the course of the week. Young Adults will have the opportunity to work more independently and the camp will hold advanced discussions around taekwon-do techniques and strategies.
Taekwon-do International Boot Camp for Adults and JuniorsThis annual camp is held at different Taekwon-do International member schools over the course of a long weekend. The theme and process of each camp will vary depending on the host school but will include elements on technique, strategy, patterns (also called forms), basic movements and sparring techniques.
Terms and Conditions for MembershipsRenewing your membershipAfter 3/1/2024 students not on a month-to-month membership will be converted to month-to-month at their renewal.
Students on a month-to-month membership do not need to renew. Their membership will be in effect and payments will continue until GRTKD receives notice in writing to [email protected] requesting cancelation of membership, and then membership will be canceled in 30 days of receiving notification.
Freezing Your MembershipIf a student wants credit for time away from training they are responsible for notifying GRTKD 30 days in advance of the beginning of time away. Notification can be made at www.glenridgetkd.com/freeze.
Tuition Refund/Cancellation Policy for MembershipsGRTKD has a NO REFUND POLICY. If the program chosen goes into 90-day default, the complete balance will become due in full and must be paid or reinstated within 15 days or it will be sent to collections and will reflect on your credit history. The Student will be responsible for all collection fees, late fees, interest fees, and all legal fees required to enforce this contract. This contract may be terminated or suspended only if: (a) the Student moves outside a 25-mile radius of the School; or (b) the Student contracts a disabling long- term illness or injury. A returned check fee of $35 will be paid by the Student within 7 days of a bounced check.
Equipment Return PolicyUniforms, t-shirts and other items of clothing can be returned as long as they are in resaleable condition. For hygiene reasons fighting gear that has been worn cannot be returned.
Illness PolicyDo not come to class if you have had fever, vomiting or diarrhea in the 24 hours before the class. Furthermore, if you miss school or work because of illness or injury we ask that you don’t come to taekwon-do later the same day.
If you have a medical reason why you need to stay away from training for two weeks or more please let us know by sending email to [email protected] and we will give you credit on your membership for the time away.
TestingTest ReadinessPromotion tests are very exciting days and we look forward to them as a celebration of a student’s progress. Our goal is for each student to test well and be proud of their performance.
Taekwon-do is a long term program with long term benefits, and over time the growth is remarkable and impactful for every student. That growth will accrue to each student individually regardless of age or current rank.
With that in mind a student should be ready to promote when they have filled the following requirements:
Master Instructors and our teaching staff consider each student’s readiness individually and carefully before each test. For instance, the corrections that you might hear being made in each class are elements that we look for improvement on: making your stance bigger/wider, bending your knee before and after each kick, being stronger with your pattern, showing self-control, etc.
Testing is held roughly every 7 weeks, with adjustments for other events. You can see the calendar with testing, camps and major events on the website at http://www.glenridgetkd.com/calendar
What to Expect on Test DayApproximately two weeks before each test we send out a list of all students invited to test. Students who are invited should be sure to train frequently in the weeks prior to the test. This allows each candidate to perform to his or her best ability.
Its not a matter of “cramming” for the test but of repeating and refining what they have learned and so test candidates are more relaxed and more proficient when they are testing.
Before the day of the test students (or a parent or guardian for students under 18) should pay the test fee at www.glenridgetkd.com/test or at the front desk. Paying the test fee is your RSVP. Student's tuition needs to be up to date as well.
All students will test in the larger practice room (named Kim). Test times start with a Black Belt demonstration, called an Interim Test. Then the students are called up in belt order, starting with the lowest ranks and going up from there. Each belt level will test as a group, so all of the Mighty Lions White and Yellow Belt candidates together, then the White and Green and so on.
Parents, family, friends and students who aren’t testing that day are encouraged to come and show support for our candidates. The test is usually divided in three sections as will be described in the announcement email.
If you are unable to come to your assigned test time please let us know. Makeup tests are conducted during the week following the test and are only open to students testing for ranks below Blue Belt.
Wearing your dobok (uniform)Students will wear a clean uniform and the appropriate belt to every class. Students should wear their own current rank belt to class.
Students should have their belt for class but in the unlikely event that they do not have their belt they may borrow a white belt by asking at the front desk. Please do not wear an old belt for a rank you have already promoted above. It will cause confusion in class.
Juniors and Adults should maintain a professional appearance and have their hair out of their face and tshirts work under the uniform must be tucked in. Keeping hair out of their face is important for students from a safety perspective because during sparring they need to be able to see the opponent without distraction at all times.
Normal body hygiene should be maintained by students, so there should be no body odor, and finger nails and toe nails should be kept trim and neat. Uniforms should be clean and not unduly wrinkled.

With that in mind a student should be ready to promote when they have filled the following requirements:
- First and foremost a student must be able to perform at the level needed for their new rank. This includes their pattern as well as all other technical elements: stances, kicking, punching and blocking, etc., while also demonstrating a maturity level appropriate for their age and their new rank.
- Students must complete a minimum number of classes. The minimum increases as students progress to higher ranks.
- Time in rank is important to allow for development as a martial artist so we do not schedule students for promotion at consecutive tests, regardless of the number of classes taken in that test cycle.

Respect Your Dojang
- Students must wear a clean uniform and their belt during class.
- Students must bow before entering and leaving the mat.
- If a student’s belt is loose or uniform needs adjusting during class, the student should turn his or her back to the flags before making any adjustments.
- Drinking water without permission, chewing gum and eating are not permitted during class.
- All students must work to keep the Dojang and the locker rooms clean.
Respect Your Instructors
- Students must bow to Black Belt instructors in greeting. Bowing is a greeting and a gesture of respect. Respect is an integral part of Taekwon-do.
- Students must use the words “Sir” or “Ma’am” when speaking to Black Belt instructors.
- Be on time for class. If you are late, kneel at the edge of the mat until you are called in.
- If you must leave while class is in progress, ask the instructor for permission and leave without disturbing the class. Bow before leaving the mat.
- Students should always stand properly and be attentive during class. Students should not stand with hands on hips, arms crossed, or leaning against walls or equipment.
- When practicing, students should practice with sincerity and diligence.
- When replying to an instructor, students should respond “Yes, Sir” or “Yes Ma’am.”
- There shall be no free fighting without an instructor’s permission and supervision.
- If you are going to be absent, please notify the school out of courtesy as soon as possible. You can see our Freeze Policy in the Terms and Conditions section.
Respect Other Students
- Conversations during class should be limited at all times.
- Students must remove watches and jewelry (with the exception of flat wedding bands and fitness trackers) before taking class. These may cause injury to the student and others and might become damaged.
- The locker rooms are not a place for conversation, comment or criticism; it is a place to get changed. Ethical self-conduct must be maintained and such conversations are inappropriate.
- Students must observe the safety of others at all times.
- Losing self-control, particularly during sparring, is unacceptable. Unnecessary roughness against a weaker or smaller person (bullying) is not permitted.
- Intentional excessive contact is prohibited.
- All students who spar must comply with the Dojang’s protective gear policy and safety rules.
- These rules around respect and conduct help provide the structure for learning, success and advancement.
How to tie your belt
Is your belt tied correctly?
The ends of your belt should come out of the knot side-to-side, not one end straight up or down. If they don't go side-to-side untie the last knot and make sure the UPPER end goes over the LOWER end and pulls through.
The ends of your belt should come out of the knot side-to-side, not one end straight up or down. If they don't go side-to-side untie the last knot and make sure the UPPER end goes over the LOWER end and pulls through.
Are the ends of your belt even? If they aren't, undo the last knot and adjust so the tips of both ends are together when pulled out straight form your body. Then tie the second knot as above.
Are both layers of the belt tied neatly together? If not, undo the last knot and slide the outer end under both layers of the belt and then tie the second knot as above.
Fighting Gear
What do you need
Students who are Blue Belt and above will need fighting gear, students Green Belt or below may get gear, particularly if they find they are uncomfortable during sparring.
A full set of gear includes:
Head gear
Mouth guard
Chest guard
Fist and forearm guards
Shin and instep guards
Groin proteector (males)
Fighting gear is available for purchase at the front desk. It will need to be sized to the wearer, and getting the correct sizes for everything will take 5-10 minutes. We recommend getting the gear before class and not afterwards when the student is sweaty.
In competition all of this gear will be required. Competitors should check the rules to ensure their gear is appropriate for the competition. In class Beginner Students will often only use a chest guard; we have chest guards available for students to borrow while in class.
